GUILD MEETING PROTOCOL

Thanks for all your cooperation the last few months as we met during COVID-19.

Now that things are opening back up and most of us are vaccinated, we are relaxing the protocols. However, in keeping with the protocols of First Presbyterian Church, as well as Dallas County, masks are now required regardless of vaccine status. As always, if you are sick, please stay home.

Holli Blackwell … September 13
Evelyn Moore … September 27

PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Y’all know that I love the dark reproduction fabric but I have to confess I am addicted to the farm girl vintage everything that Lori Holt puts out in the Fat Quarter Shop. Not just fabric but all the cute little notions that go with all the fabrics. I’m in big trouble, but thank goodness most of what I look at is out of stock- so I’m not the only one that likes it. Her videos just make it worse, so now I’m waiting on all her new stuff. Cute little zippers to go on the project bags she makes and then she started crocheting little flowers to go on them and then you have to buy the little charm to go on the zipper pull….HELP!

SEPTEMBER PROGRAM

Our September program will focus one last time on using your fabric scraps. There are many patterns available that call for small amounts of fabric to make individual quilt blocks or other parts of a quilt. The pattern might suggest buying 1/8 yd. or 1/4 yd. when you might only need maybe three 4″x2″ pieces and a 5″x4″ piece. If you have small scraps, you can save money, time, and the effort of shopping for a few small pieces. Come explore the possibilities September 6.

WORKSHOP

September 18, 2021 — 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Grand Prairie. We will be working on blocks for Quilts of Valor for donations. Let’s see how many we can make! Bring your own lunch!

BLOCK OF THE MONTH

This is the last entry in this Block of the Month series. We are doing 2 borders this month, the second one with a flange for extra color.

Border 1: this is a plain border, with no mitred corners. 2 short strips attached top and bottom, then 2 longer strips attached to the sides. These strips are 1.5 inches wide.

My block is 27.5 inches per slide. That makes my border strips

2 strips  1.5×27.5
2 strips 1.5×29.5

Attach them top and bottom, then side and side, like so:

Border 2: You are adding 2 fabric strips at a time: a narrow flange, and the actual border strip.

Cutting (use these measurements if your block matches mine):

Flange:2 strips 1 inch by 29.52 strips 1 inch by 30.25Border2 strips 2.5 inches by 29.52 strips by 33.75Fold your flange strips in half longwise and press them hard. A good time to use steam or some pressing spray.

Watch this video https://bit.ly/3AsFwWr to see how to layer the block, the flange, and the border strip before sewing.

  • The quilt block face up
  • The flange with raw edge to the edge of the block
  • The border strip face down

Your fabric edges should all match up; I’ve moved them here to show the order.

Pin to the top of the quilt and sew. Repeat for the bottom of the quilt block.

For the remaining two sides: you’ve noticed that the flange strips are shorter than your border strips. That’s because this flange does not go from edge to edge. Instead, it tucks under the previous 2 flanges on either side. With these last 2 flanges, fold about .5 inch under on each end and press.

When you start sewing, at first you’re only sewing the final border on. When you approach the flange from the previous border, tuck your flange under it, and sew the border strip and the flange strip on at the same time. When you come to the end flange on the other end, tuck the end of the flange under it, and continuing sewing the final border to the end. You may need to trim your flange to fit.

And that’s the end!
