Elisabeth McMahon … April 17
Can you believe it’s April already? Where has the first quarter of this year gone? Easter will be here soon. Then it will be Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, Father’s Day and the 4th of July before we know it. People will be planning vacations — I have two trips scheduled in June! What are you doing this Spring and Summer? Hopefully you are working on creating some wonderful projects. Maybe you went to the Dallas Quilt Show and got inspired. Maybe you saw a magazine with a fantastic quilt pattern. Maybe you pulled out a UFO and got to work on that. Whatever you are doing, be creative and sew, sew, sew!
Saturday March 4 we had the first workshop of the year! 15 people came to work on “the stripe quilt.” We used one piece of striped fabric for the entire quilt. The patterns all varied depending on how the pieces were cut and arranged and of course the design of the stripes. It was great to see all of the ideas that were brought into the quilts. For our next workshop I will be teaching about the different ways to use a panel. If you are planning to come, start shopping for your panel now!
Welcome to our new members, Marcy Morgan and Alice Hicks. We are happy that you have joined our Guild. Welcome back to Shara Hill-Scheibner who rejoined the Guild in March.
“For our April meeting, we will be having our “Bring a Friend” and game night meeting! Please remember that if you would like to participate in our game fun you will need to bring five 5X5 charm squares. Please make sure that if you do bring a friend that you make sure they have enough to participate as well. Come enjoy all the fun…..and don’t forget to bring a friend or two!
Please remember to bring back your boxes for Operation Shoebox to the next meeting! We made 15 quilts last year to donate to our veteran’s at the VA hospital. We definitely want to keep those blocks coming to donate as many as we can as a guild!”

Thanks for bringing in your fabric and fat quarters. Because of the generosity of you and our anonymous member, we have enough for 500 Goody Bags. Thanks also to Shirley Lewis for volunteering to roll them and attach our Grand Prairie Quilt Guild business card. Thanks also to Janis Hill for donating a small handmade over-the-shoulder purse for the silent auction. We still need at least one more member to donate a mini-quilt (no larger than 24” on every side) or any other quality handmade item. These need to be turned in by our May meeting.
Janice Overton has volunteered to serve as our co-representative to TAQG. Thanks Janice! She is also pulling together items and will assemble our door prize donation. If you forgot to bring a new, sewing related item to our last meeting, it is not too late. Just bring it to our April meeting.
Save the date for Rally Day 2017. This is a FREE all-day event for members of TAQG guilds (and yes we are a TAQG guild). Non-quilt guild members pay a $5 entry fee. The guest speaker is Cynthia Ragone. If you want to check out her quilts, her website is cajunclassicsquilts.com. Here are the dates:
Thursday, July 6th Zydeco workshop in Mesquite
Friday, July 7th Gypsy Moth workshop in Mesquite
Saturday, July 8th RALLY DAY at Mimosa Lane Baptist Church in Mesquite
Mon & Tues, July 10th Joyeux Noel workshop in Arlington.
More information about the content of the workshops will be available online or from Katrina Lindley soon. There are fees connected with each workshop. Registration began on February 1st for guild members. The workshops will be open to non-guild members beginning May 1st. So if you are interested in attending a workshop, please contact Katrina Lindley.
Katrina and Janice will begin selling lunch tickets, Rally Day pins, and the tickets for the pre-Rally Day raffle at the April meeting. These can be purchased from them up until our July meeting.
