What’s your favorite part of a project? Without a doubt, for me it’s picking out the fabric. I just love the thrill of standing in front of that rainbow selection of textiles — my mind racing with the possibilities of color, pattern and visual texture. Even when I think I have the perfect combination, I’ll still continue to explore my options just a little bit longer for fear that I’ve missed something. Now it’s time to journey home with continued anticipation of cutting and then sewing that new quilt.
Inevitably I will reach a point where I lose interest and motivation in what I’m doing. Often times, my mind jumps ahead to the next project before I’ve completed the current one. This probably explains why there are so many UFOs in the sewing room. Completing a project just doesn’t hold the same excitement as starting something new. Regrettably, I must confess my New Year’s Resolution has already failed. Completed UFOs—0. New tops that need to be quilted—3 New quilts in progress—2. Oh, well……Happy Sewing.
The presentation for March will be a make and take. We will be making a scented potholder. What you will need to bring with you is a 9 inch or 12 inch completed block and enough fabric to make a pocket back on your block. That’s it! I will be providing the rest!
I have several machines to set up for people to share since there is minimal sewing to this project, but could at least 2 more machines to set up. If you can bring a machine, please e-mail or text me so I know I have enough!
I will also be signing up anyone that would like to participate in our UFO challenge. You will need to bring in your UFO and pay your $1.00 in March to participate. Remember that there will be a cap of up to 5 UFOs, and it will cost $1.00 per entry you wish to enter with.
I will have a full printing of the rules and the date you will need to have them done and bring back with you upon sign up! March will be the last month to sign up for this challenge!!!
Also, please make sure that if you volunteered to take a box last month for Operation Shoebox that you bring it back for the next meeting so that someone else may have a chance to make a block for our charity quilt! Remember, you may use the fabric in the box or you may use any in your stash, but please make sure either way there is enough fabric left in the box for the next volunteer to make a 12 inch by 12 inch block. There are no minimum fabrics that must be used and you may use ANY pattern you wish and the fabric must be red, white, blue or any combination of these colors! (And on a side note, overachievers are MORE than welcome for this particular project and will not be turned away!
If you can only make one block, we understand completely, but the more blocks we have, the more quilts we could make. So if you would like to make more, they will be gladly accepted!!!)

Rally Day 2016 will be Saturday, July 9th at Mimosa Lane Baptist Church, 1233 N. Belt Line Road, Mesquite, TX 75149. Doors open at 9 a.m. Admission is FREE to members of our quilt guild. Goody bags will be given to the first 500 in attendance. Door prizes will also be awarded. The first door prize awarded will be a sewing machine. The guest speaker this year is Kimberley Einmo. Her website is kimberlyeinmo.com.
Our guild voted in February to supply a baggie containing four 5″ squares of fabric along with our guild’s business card for each of the goody bags. Remember to bring your squares of high-quality 100% cotton fabric to our meeting on March 7th. If you don’t have a surplus of fabric, please do NOT buy anything. Others have enough to share. If you do not have time to cut the squares, bring the uncut fabric. Evelyn Moore has graciously agreed to bring her automatic cutting machine to the meeting. Kathy Poole has volunteered to bring the zip-lock bags. Michelle Rodriguez is bringing the business cards.
Remember we are on the committee to work Rally Day this year. Thanks to those who have already signed up to work. I still need a few volunteers to help setup and police the raffle quilt area before the speaker and during lunch. If you volunteer, you will NOT MISS anything happening in the auditorium!
We also need two members to volunteer to donate something for the TAQG Silent Auction. These items can be either a mini-quilt (smaller than 24 inches on all sides), table runners, purses/bags, or any other quality hand-crafted item. These items must be turned in to Katrina on or before our May 2nd meeting. The proceeds raised from the sale of these items are tax deductible.
There will be multiple workshops, a two-day workshop on Thursday and Friday before Rally Day in Mesquite. Two one-day workshops in Arlington, one on Monday and another on Tuesday after Rally Day. We have forms for the workshops available. However if you are interested, please pull a form off the TAQG website taqg.org and mail it in with your payment as soon as possible. The workshops have traditionally filled up quickly. There is a fee for the workshops.
We are selling pre-Rally Day raffle tickets. The grand prize and the 2nd prize both contain a sewing machine. Tickets are $1 each, or 6 for $5 and will be available until our general meeting on June 6th. The drawing will be Friday, July 8th. You need not be present to win. There will be an additional Raffle on Rally Day itself. The grand prize for this raffle also includes a sewing machine.
We are also selling advance tickets for a box lunch on Rally Day. Tickets are $10 and there are four menu choices. McAllister’s is the caterer this year. We will be selling these until June 6th as well.
You may also purchase a Rally Day 2016 pin for $5 from me. We are also taking orders for Rally Day T-shirts. The price of the T-shirt varies from $15 – $30 including tax, depending on style and size. We have unisex or ladies cut, with or without rhinestones. Orders for T-shirts will be taken only at our March 7th meeting. Shirts will be delivered at our June 6th meeting.

- If you participated in the Mystery Quilt Workshop on February 6th, be sure to bring your Mystery Quilt with you to the March meeting. This can be your completed quilt or your in-progress work. There were 20 people at the workshop, so we look forward to seeing lots of Mystery Quilts!
- Be sure to bring your charm squares for the Rally Day Goody Bags. Katrina has a full article in this newsletter about what we are doing for the Goody Bags. Be sure to read it. Everyone should bring at least 68 squares that are 5×5 — please try to have them cut before the meeting. Ziplock bags will be provided.
- Be sure to bring your quilt block so you can participate in the Make and Take for the March program. Carrie explains it all in her article in this newsletter.
- Be sure to wear a name tag at our meetings. If you don’t wear a name tag, you will be charged 50 cents each time.
- February 1, 2016: Tory called the meeting to order at 7:06.
- The Guild had 4 birthdays for February: Debi Cypert, Carol Franklin, Jeri Bush and Janis Hill.
- Remembrances: Ruth Goodman has been having back problems. Our condolences to Cathy Mullin on the passing of her father in January.
- The minutes of the January meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter.
- Janis reported that the balance in the guild account is $1,533.58. Two deposits were added – $525.00 and $20.00 – to the previous balance of $988.58.
- Shirley Lewis, Membership, reported we have 30 paid members present along with two visitors, Suzanne Daugherty and Elizabeth Robinson. We welcome new members – Penny Johnson and Marlene Tanner.
- Kathy Poole, Door Prizes, conducted the door prize drawing. Winners were Elisabeth McMahon, Grace Norris, Cathy Mullin and Penny Johnson.
- Carol Franklin, Publicity, reported the Guild Meetings have been added to the City of Grand Prairie Events Calendar for 2016.
- Michelle Rodriguez, Newsletter, reminded members that the newsletter information deadline is the 10th of the month.
- The Audit Committee, Cathy Mullin, Elisabeth McMahon and Debi Cypert, reported that an audit of the Guild’s books for 2015 was completed and no errors or omissions were found.
- Lauren Metang, Workshops, reminded the group that the workshop is February 6th. Instructions on fabric requirements have been e-mailed to participants.
- Lauren Metang stood in for Christine Blanton, Block of the Month. Carol Franklin won the 13 Log Cabin Blocks. The March BOM will be “Empty Spool” and will be published in the newsletter.
- Katrina Lindley, TAQG representative, reported that Rally Day is July 9th and our Guild will be hosting (Janis made cool aprons with our logo). Katrina has TAQG pins and raffle tickets for sale. This year there have been 4 sewing machines donated for door prizes. Our guild’s job will be to help set up and police the raffle quilt area, check in attendees and hand out goody bags. The volunteers will need to be there at 8:00 AM. The two day workshop will be $100-$120 and will be July 7th – 8th. There will also be two one-day workshops at a cost of $40-$50. This year the silent auction will not be limited to mini quilts.
- A motion was made that each member donate 2 yards of material cut into 2 ½ inch strips for the goody bags. Motion was withdrawn – cost was prohibitive. Cathy Mullin made a new motion that each member bring enough 5″ squares to make 17 baggies of 4 squares. Seconded by Kathy Poole. Motion carried.
- Grace reported that the “Stitch a Bit” group meets on the 4th Thursday – 9:30 to 3:30 at The Woods Methodist Church, Robinson at Bardin Rd. The next meeting will be February 25th.
- Evelyn Moore reported that she has tickets for the Dallas Quilt Show at her shop “Angles and Moore” and the tickets will be at a reduced price.
- Carrie Stanford, 1st VP-Programs, reported that in April we will have “Bring a Friend” night.
- Show and Tell participants for February were Grace Norris, Michelle Rodriguez, Tory Swartzwelder, Evelyn Moore, Janis Hill and Pam Landrum.
- The first Round Robin-Operation Shoe Box boxes were returned and redistributed for next month.
- 1st VP Carrie kicked off the UFO challenge. Shara, Tory, Janis, Shirley A., Elisabeth, Lauren, Pam, Evelyn and Carrie each brought their UFO projects and paid the $1.00 per entry fee. Each entry in the UFO challenge will need to be a totally complete quilt (quilted or tied with binding) to qualify to be entered to win. Entries will still be taken at the March meeting.
- Our program for March will be a Make and Take. Members will bring a 9″ or 12″ quilt block with coordinating fabric for the envelope back. Carrie also thanked Evelyn Moore for donating the backing fabric and quilting for the Quilts of Valor (Operation Shoe Box) project.

The Executive Board meeting was called to order at 6:30 by President Tory Swartzwelder. Executive Board members present were Janice Overton, Lauren Metang, Janis Hill, Carrie Stanford, Debi Cypert, Carol Franklin, Grace Norris, Michelle Rodriguez, Kathy Poole and Shirley Lewis.
Proposed changes to the Quilter’s Guild of Grand Prairie By-Laws and Standing Rules were reviewed.

BLOCK OF THE MONTH
A couple of things: I encourage everyone to shop for Civil War fabric.
I would suggest getting 10-12 fat quarters to choose from for the Blocks of the each month. Please stick to the color scheme that you see each month on the example. The blue can be light or dark for example, but it should be blue.
We will be drawing each month for a winner of the blocks. The finished blocks are 8.5″ squared.
