NEXT MEETING: JUNE 4, 2012

WHAT TO BRING TO THE MEETING

  • Name tag
  • Block party block
  • Show-and-Tell
  • Door prizes for names beginning with A or B

PRESIDENT’S CORNER

I just saw an ad for a “tater” chip quilt pattern.  Sounds fun, interesting and looked simple.  Why can’t I ever think of something like that and be able to sell it?  I missed seeing all of you at the May meeting.  I always enjoy seeing what people have made.  I did see the pictures, but that’s not the same as being there.

Happy quilting!

Jane Lamb

BIRTHDAYS

  • Grace Norris … June 19

RETREAT

Nine of us went to Victorian House Retreat in Weatherford the weekend of May 18th.  We had a good time shopping, eating and sewing.  Weatherford now has no less than 5 places to go to buy fabric and most of us went to all of them, sometimes more than once!

Our Fall Retreat will be at the same place on October 19, 20, and 21st.  If you are interested in going, the cost is the same as usual, $40 per night plus tax, 2 night total is $85.60.  A deposit of $40 will hold your place.  Space usually fills fast and is limited to the first 12 to sign up.

Looking ahead to next year, we went ahead and booked the weekend for the Spring Retreat and it is May 17, 18, and 19th, 2013.  It’s the same weekend as usual, the weekend after Mother’s Day and the weekend before Memorial Day.  Cost will be the same.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

JUNE  PROGRAM

Our June program will be a Make & Take.  You should bring your sewing kit.  The rest of the supplies will be provided.

WORKSHOP NEWS

Ten people participated in the Mystery Quilt workshop on April 21st and Michelle and Elisabeth showed their almost completed tops at the May meeting.  We’d love to see everyone else’s completed Mystery Quilts soon!

Our next workshop will be a Charity Workshop on Saturday, June 9th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church.  We will be making teen size quilts.  The pattern is in the newsletter and anyone that wants to cut the strips of fabric ahead of time is welcome to do so.  Scraps or fat quarters are great to use for this quilt.   The Guild will provide the flannel backing.  For lunch everyone should bring a potluck dish to share.  If you can’t come and stay the whole time, come and stay for a little while.  If you don’t want to sew or can’t stay long enough to sew, Elisabeth will have a non-sewing project available after lunch.

TREASURER’S REPORT

MINUTES

The meeting was called to order by Vice President Michelle Rodriguez as President Jane Lamb is recovering from surgery and was unable to attend the meeting.

  • Also still recuperating from surgery is Lillie Martinez who had knee replacement.  Please continue to keep both Jane and Lillie in your prayers for their recovery and also remember former member Karen Corn who has suffered a recurrence of cancer.
  • Our only birthday this month is Sue Heard who will get her fat quarter at the next meeting.
  • There is one correction to the minutes from last month – there were 17 members present rather than 16.  Elisabeth moved we accept the minutes as corrected, Grace seconded.  The motion carried.
  • There was no activity with our bank account and the balance remains $1,428.01.  The treasurer’s report will be filed for audit.
  • We had 15 members present tonight.
  • Door prizes were won by  Margaret, Cathy, and Barbara.
  • Michelle announced that there are two spaces available for the retreat as we have had two cancellations.  She needs a deposit tonight if anyone would like to take one of the spaces.  There are eight of the attendees who are going on Thursday for an extra day of sewing.
  • Elisabeth reported on the workshop held April 21st and she and Michelle showed their almost completed tops.  The next workshop will be a charity workshop on June 9th.  Those present will be making quilts for teens.  Grace moved the guild purchase flannel for the backs of the quilts made, Shirley seconded.  Motion carried.
  • There was no new business.
  • Old Business:  Sue Taylor reported on the upcoming Rally Day presented by the Texas Association of Quilt Guilds to be held July 14th in Mesquite.  She offered information on the workshops, lunch for attendees and the responsibilities of the member guilds.  As this is our first year and we are just now getting the information, we will wait until next year to participate in the attendee gifts but will donate two door prizes.  Janice Overton moved and Grace seconded that we purchase a ¼ page ad in the program book for Rally Day.  The motion carried.  TAG contact for all events is Mariheah@att.net.
  • The program for next month will be announced later.  Our program tonight was on different threads and we are much better informed on the types of thread available and the uses for each type.
  • Following the program, the meeting was adjourned.

QUILT TIP

Tip:  I employ a “thread bunny” to keep my machine from eating the pieces!  A “thread bunny” is a small scrap of fabric which you put under the pressure foot as you begin to sew.  When you start a set of patches on the “thread bunny” you feed them under the pressure foot with less chance of their being chewed by the needle or having the machine stall.  Using a “thread bunny” to begin and end sewing also eliminates long threads on the sections being pieced.  Because the sections are chain pieced together, the tails of long thread stay on the “thread bunny” at the beginning and the end of each section.
