PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Oops…almost forgot about the newsletter and boy would I be trouble with Michelle.

I have been busy today getting a wall ready to paint…had covered it with fabric and batting about 12 yrs ago so had to take it down in order to paint. All this comes about since I finished the wedding ring quilt my aunt sent me to sew. The fabric in the quilt would fight with the floral in the quilt. Anyway I am looking forward to having such a nice memory of my aunt on my bed. We need to hold dear the family still alive and fond memories of those gone by. See ya next month! Love to all,

Marty Staten

SYLVIA’S BRIDAL SAMPLER

The blocks for the next meeting (April 25th) are Stamp Baskets, Gulf Star, Cross and Crown. Even if you are not doing Sylvia’s Quilt, you can still come to the stitch group and do bindings, other hand work or another project that you are working on. We meet the 4th Monday of each month from 7 p.m to 9 p.m. at The Woods United Methodist Church on Bardin Road (just west of Robinson).

APRIL PROGRAM

Feedsacks have an interesting history and we will learn a little about that history at the April 4 meeting. They were especially important to quilters. I grew up wearing clothes made from feedsacks and sleeping under quilts made from scraps of feedsack fabric.

If you have a quilt made from feedsacks, please bring it to share. See you in April!

MINUTES

  • President Marty Staten called the meeting to order at 7 P.M.
  • The minutes from the previous meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter and filed for audit.
  • Grace reported that we have a balance of $1,484.39 after she wrote a check to the 1st Presbyterian Church for $200.(After some discussion, she will verify and put the report in the newsletter.)
  • There are no member birthdays in March.
  • Janice announced we have 13 members present and there are address lists on the sign-in table. Also, our membership cards are ready for 2011.
  • Michelle reported that her grandmother, Eula Lewis, passed away on February 10th at the age of 102.
  • Michelle also reported that the retreat for May 13 – 15 is full although there may be one spot as the retreat gets closer. She also said that 11 ladies participated in the mystery workshop on February 12th. Those present tonight from the workshop and showing their projects were Jane, Barbara, Marty, Elisabeth, and Sue. Michelle also reminded us that the Stitch-a-Bit group will meet again on March 28th and The Woods United Methodist Church at 7pm.
  • We had two block of the month drawings – one for last month’s block and one for this month’s block. The Ohio Star blocks were won by Elisabeth and the Louisiana blocks were won by Lillie.
  • New Business: Michelle issued a challenge to the guild members. Moda has a challenge to quilters to contribute 1800 block so that they can make 100 quilts in 100 days to give to our servicemen and women who have so bravely served in Iraq and Afghanistan. She passed out the pattern so that we can make our blocks and bring them to the meeting in April. We will then send them together to be made into quilts. Each member can make several blocks, or just one, but the more we make, the more quilts that can be distributed.
  • Marty announced that our treasurer’s books have been audited and are in order.
  • Door prizes were won by Debi, Lillie, and Jane.
  • Several members had show & tell – Nancy, Elisabeth, Michelle, Barbara, and Ashlyn Kaplan, granddaughter of Sue, who showed her first quilt.
  • Shirley announced next month’s program will be about using feed, or flour, sacks in quiltmaking. Nancy then presented a wonderful program about quilting in Viet Nam.
  • Meeting adjourned.

MODA CHALLENGE

Moda Fabrics/United Notions has issued a challenge to all quilters to help them get 1800 blocks by May 1st in order to make 100 quilts in 100 days for the Quilts of Valor project that designers Polly Minick and Laurie Simpson are involved in. Patterns were passed out at the March Guild meeting and a pattern is included in this newsletter. We are asking everyone in our Guild to make Just One Star block. It takes a 10 inch piece of medium blue or red for the star and a fat eighth for the background. Piecing the block will take about 30-45 minutes of your time. Do not square up your blocks or trim the triangle pieces. Moda will do that. Everyone should put their name and state on the block per the directions on the block pattern in brown pigma pen.

Because of when our meeting dates are, we are asking everyone to bring their finished blocks to the April Guild meeting on April 4th. This will give us time to package our blocks and get them sent to Moda prior to the deadline.

If you have any questions, you can go here for the scoop:  http://minickandsimpson.blogspot.com/2011/03/just-one-star-tutorial.html

Pattern begins on page 6 of the newsletter.
