PRESIDENT’S CORNER

It was a pleasure to meet Mary, Debbie and Ashlin, Sue Heard’s granddaughter, at our June meeting.  Debbie indicated that she will be joining our guild and is a former member of Trinity Valley Quilters (one of my favorite Quilt Shows).  Mary is a retired banker so I am sure we have many acquaintances in common.  Mary is a beginning quilter and would like to help the guild with our charity quilt workshop later this month.

We are certainly starting the busy summer season and missed several members at our meeting.   Susan demonstrated a technique to create shadows/texture to fabric.  The effect could create shadows for appliqué that is very striking and adds a new dimension to a quilt.  I don’t think I would have explored this avenue if Susan had not brought it to the meeting.  Thanks, Susan for the program!

BIRTHDAYS
Ruth Callahan: July 15

JULY PROGRAM

The Guild will be 16 years old in July! To celebrate, we will have our annual birthday dinner on July 6 catered by Eddlemon’s. The food will be paid for by the Guild.   This year drinks and dessert will be included in the cost of the food, so members do not need to bring food.

We are asking the Guild members to bring canned goods for the Grand Prairie Food & Clothing Co-op and two or three fat quarters (or other great quilty items) to be used as prizes for Quilto. Hope to see everyone at the meeting!

WORKSHOP NEWS

I’ve scheduled the charity quilt workshop for Saturday, June 27 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church.  If you can’t spend the entire time sewing, just come for part of the day.  We will use Grace’s pre-cut strips to make blocks OR you can use your own scraps or charm squares or panels to make your own design.  The main thing is to come and sew.

Supplies to bring:  Your standard sewing supplies such as sewing machine, thread, scissors, pins, rotary mat and cutter and ruler.  An ironing board will be furnished.

Instead of bringing food to share, bring your own lunch or make a run to Don Juan’s or your favorite fast food place.  Or, we could order pizzas.  Bring your own drinks and snacks that you will want throughout the day.

A few people signed up at the June meeting, but I am hopeful that more of you will come.  There is a real need for the quilts we make, so come help.

RETREAT
How exciting! All twelve spaces for our retreat on July 24-26 are full! If you are still interested in going, please let me know and I’ll put your name on the list in case someone needs to drop out. Cost is $110 for the weekend (plus food). We will have a brief meeting on July 6th right after the regular Guild meeting to discuss arrival times, directions, etc.

JULY BLOCK PARTY

PRAIRIE QUEEN

The Prairie Queen block is the logo of our Grand Prairie Quilters’ Guild.
We have made it many times over the years, but hopefully you will feel it is appropriate for our July block. You will need two fabrics, one that is dark or medium and one that is light. May I suggest you chose fabrics that are Patriotic in color, or use fabric from the Civil War era.

Fabric 1 will be the block center and  Corners

From Fabric one: DOMINANT FABRIC
Cut 8 -2 1/2″ squares (for 4-patch units) .
Cut 1-4 1/2″ square (block center)
Cut 2-5″ squares (for triangle/squares)
From Fabric two:
Cut 8-2 1/2″ squares (for nine patch units)
Cut 2-5″ squares (for triangle/squares)
Sew the 2- 1/2″ squares together to form 4-4-patch units. Press towards the dark fabric.
To make the triangle/squares for the comers, put the two 5″ squares right sides together, draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the 5″ light fabric squares.
(This will be your cutting line.) Draw two additional lines 1/4″ on each side of your center line. Sew on these lines and then cut the middle line and you now have two triangle/squares. Press seams to dark fabric.
Layout the blocks as shown in the two diagrams.
