PRESIDENT’S CORNER It is hard to believe we are coming to the end of another year and my 2008 resolution to finish UFO’s is now going to be my 2009 resolution. It seems that I once had big blocks of time that I could sit at my machine and really get alot done. I don’t know what happened! So now I am going to focus on what I can get done in little chunks of time. Maybe this should be a program…

NEW MEMBERS

DRUNKARD’S PATH: We will be using the templates on the bottom of the page for this one. We will trace the templates onto some template plastic, then cut our plastic to make our own, workable templates.
Background Fabric:
• _____ Cut eight 3 1/2″ squares of the background fabric. After we have the squares cut, we will use the template to cut the fabric into the proper shape.
•_____ Cut eight 2 1/2″ squares of the background fabric. After we have the squares cut, we will use the template to cut the fabric into the proper shape.
Dark Fabric:
• _____ Cut eight 3 1/2″ squares of the background fabric. After we have the squares cut, we will use the template to cut the fabric into the proper shape.
• _____ Cut eight 2 1/2″ squares of the background fabric. After we have the squares cut, we will use the template to cut the fabric into the proper shape.
Construction:
Fold & press each piece to find the center. Align centers, with the smaller piece on the top, and pin. Pin the center pin, the pin each edge, and face the pins in the opposite direction. Then add two more pins between the center and the edge pins. Then we will sew, slowly, and ease the curve while we sew slowly. Stop at every pin, and adjust the bottom piece of fabric so that you are not sewing any puckers into it. Make sure the quarter inch seam allowance is kept at all times. After you have sewn the two fabrics together, be sure to clip the seam, so that it will lie flat.
MINUTES
- The October 6 meeting of the Quilter’s Guild of Grand Prairie was called to order by Debi Cypert at 7 p.m.
- The minutes were approved as printed in the newsletter.
- The treasurer’s report was approved as printed in the newsletter and will be filed for audit. There will be a deposit of $15.60 this month — two new members and some loose change.
- Remembrances: Wanda Chilton (former member) will be having surgery on her hands. Joe Kutz (husband of former member Emily, as well as friend of Grace’s) had bypass surgery.
- Birthdays: Linda Boggus, Pat Johnson, Cathy Mullin.
- Membership: There were 18 members and two new members, Sheila Kinsey and Sandy Holton present — a total of 20 members.
- Newsletter: English Street Quilter will be advertising again for three months. Should be getting check this week.
- Publicity: Grand Prairie Today is consistently putting us in the calendar.
- Row Quilt: next row if you are following the pattern is the Gingerbread Men. Bring to November meeting.
- Workshop: Mystery Quilt had nine in attendance, three completed their quilts and brought them tonight to show.
- Future Program: November will be the Ugly Fabric Challenge and Susan will try to get in contact with Donna Bell to see if she can reschedule her program to November since she cancelled for tonight.
- There was discussion on whether we want to do a Block Party for next year or some other sort of exchange. If you have any ideas, please let Grace know.
- Sheila reported that the Arlington Guild newsletter said Vickie Bramblet won a ribbon at the State Fair of Texas for a quilt.
- Door prizes were won by Carol, Debi, Lisa, Joyce and Lillie.
- Show & Tell: Susan, Michelle, Sandy Holton.
- New business: Nominating Committee needs to form tonight to bring a slate of officers for 2009 to the November meeting. Susan and Sandy Shown are automatically on the committee with three other members. Michelle, Elisabeth and Lisa volunteered.
- Susan showed how to applique as her new member lesson and the meeting was adjourned.

NOVEMBER PROGRAM The program will be given by Donna Bell, owner of Quilt Parts. Quilt Parts is an online shop — www.quiltparts.com. Donna also is a vendor at several local quilt shows. For our meeting, she plans to bring “Log Cabin” rulers, that work with jelly rolls. After Donna does a demo on how to use these rulers, she is also going to talk about how to get more done faster. Sounds like she’s a “Superquilter!” We will be offered the opportunity to shop during our meeting, so have everyone remember to bring your $$. This is a reschedule from October.
We will also have an Ugly Fabric Challenge Style Show. If you plan to participate, be sure to bring what you made to the November meeting.
ROW QUILT If you are following the pattern for the Row Quilt, November is the month to bring the Gingerbread Men Row. If you have gotten behind (or ahead), bring what you’ve got to show. We look forward to seeing everyone’s work in progress.

Hello from The Women’s Museum! Your blog is absolutely fantastic, and I wanted to invite the Quilter’s Guild of Grand Prairie to our exhibit opening this Thursday!
On Thursday, November 6th, join The Women’s Museum: An Institute for the Future from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. for the opening reception for the exhibit Partisan Pieces: Quilts of Political and Patriotic Persuasion. This free event will include wine and appetizers as well as a complimentary valet. Dr. Marian Ann J. Montgomery, Project Coordinating Curator, Quilt Mania II, will speak on the significance of the featured 19th and 20th century quilts.

If you can’t make it on Thursday, please stop by and see the exhibit at your convenience. It will be on display at The Women’s Museum until March 2009.
Exhibit information: Curated by the International Quilt Study Center and Museum, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the exhibit features 15 quilts illustrating 19th and 20th century political life from the perspective, and from the needles, of well informed and patriotic American women. In the days before women’s suffrage, these quilts served as women’s voices.
